A Little Tooth

Week before last was particularly brutal. Butterfly did not sleep. At. All. Even when she was sleeping she was wiggling and moaning. On Sunday she got her first tooth. And then it all made sense to a zombie Mom & Dad.

The New York MTA has this "Poetry in Motion" campaign. It's surely some form of advertising, but honestly I just stick to the poetry. This one had been a stand out for a while...and now it really applies.
I just hope DL never runs off with some "sweet talker on his way to jail"

A Little Tooth
by Thomas Lux

Your baby grows a tooth, then two,
and four, and five, then she wants some meat
directly from the bone. It's all

over: she'll learn some words, she'll fall
in love with cretins, dolts, a sweet
talker on his way to jail. And you,

your wife, get old, flyblown, and rue
nothing. You did, you loved, your feet
are sore. It's dusk. Your daughter's tall.

This is touching. Thanks for the post.

On a lighter note, when my wife and I were living in NYC (now relegated to the Boston suburbs), there was a Poetry in Motion poem that went:

"Their relationship consisted /
In discussing if it existed."

We always loved that one and laughed every time we saw it.
